E-commerce for Udaipur Businesses: Platforms, Payments and Selling Beyond Rajasthan
Udaipur's handicraft, marble, textile, jewellery and miniature painting businesses sell products that buyers across India and abroad already look for online. Getting a store live is the easy part. Choosing the right setup is what decides whether it actually sells.
Your own store, a marketplace, or both?
| Option | Good for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplaces (Amazon.in, Flipkart, Etsy for handmade goods) | Reaching buyers quickly, without building traffic yourself | Commissions, price competition and less control over branding |
| Your own store | Repeat customers, wholesale buyers, higher margins and your own brand | You have to bring the traffic, through search, social media or ads |
| Both | Most established sellers | More catalog work to keep stock and prices in sync |
Many Udaipur businesses start on a marketplace to test demand, then add their own store for repeat and international buyers.
Choosing a platform for your own store
Shopify is the fastest way to a reliable store. Hosting, security and checkout are handled for you, and there are apps for most needs. You pay a monthly subscription plus app costs.
WooCommerce runs on WordPress. It's flexible and has no platform subscription, but you're responsible for hosting, updates and security, which many small businesses neglect.
A custom store (for example, built with Next.js) makes sense when you have unusual needs: complex product configuration, wholesale pricing rules, or tight integration with existing software. It costs more to build, but you aren't tied to a platform's limits.
For most small Udaipur sellers with fewer than a few hundred products, Shopify is the sensible default.
Payments
For Indian customers, use a payment gateway that supports UPI, cards, net banking and wallets. Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree are common choices. Compare transaction fees, settlement times, and whether they support international cards if you sell abroad.
For international customers, check that your gateway supports multi-currency payments, or use your platform's built-in option, and be clear about shipping costs and duties at checkout.
Shipping
Shipping aggregators let you compare courier rates and print labels from one dashboard, which saves a lot of time once you're shipping daily. Fragile products like marble and pottery need tested packaging; one broken delivery and a bad review cost more than good packaging.
GST and invoices
If you're GST-registered, your store should produce GST-compliant invoices automatically. Set up HSN codes for your product categories from the start; fixing them across hundreds of products later is tedious. Your accountant should confirm the details for your business.
Product listings that sell
Whether on your own store or a marketplace, the listing does the selling:
- Photos on a clean background, plus photos showing scale and detail. Handicraft buyers want to see the craftsmanship up close.
- Titles that say what the product is, in the words buyers search for, not just the design's name.
- Descriptions with dimensions, materials, care instructions and what makes it handmade.
- Clear policies on shipping time, returns and breakage.
Selling abroad
Udaipur crafts have strong international demand. Amazon's Global Selling programme, Etsy and your own store with international shipping are the usual routes. Each has its own listing rules, and Amazon in particular is strict about titles and images. Our Amazon cataloging service handles that part.
